IIPP FACULTY FELLOWS PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In the summer of 2010, a cohort of faculty members from Minority Serving Institution (MSI) campuses will participate in the UNCFSP Faculty Fellows Program. This program, focused on developing international education curriculum, will expose Faculty Fellows to replicable models used to engage rising undergraduate juniors and seniors in the IIPP Fellowship Program. Based on their experiences as Faculty Fellows, participants will develop lesson plans designed to enhance international affairs infrastructure on their home campuses.

Faculty Fellows will participate in joint sessions with IIPP Fellows and in separate, specialized sessions where they will discuss curriculum development and implementation with instructors, additional experts, and other guests. Curricula developed through this initiative will be made available to the wider MSI community through workshops, conferences and online resources. The Faculty Fellows Program is organized as follows:

Week One: Sophomore Summer Policy Institute (SSPI) SSPI introduces new IIPP Fellows to the basics of international policy development, foreign affairs, study abroad, cultural competence, careers in these fields, and options for graduate study. Topics typically include Introductory Statistics, International Relations and National Security, Introductory Economics, Research Methods, Policy Writing, and World Geography. Faculty Fellows will participate in SSPI coursework, thus increasing their exposure to a variety of curriculum techniques and resources.

Week Two: Junior Summer Policy Institute (JSPI) JSPI builds upon the foundation provided during SSPI, deepening student understanding of international and domestic policy analysis. A central focus of JSPI is to strengthening students’ quantitative and analytic skills. Students complete graduate-level coursework in microeconomics, policy analysis, statistics, and leadership theory. Students are also engaged in professional development activities that afford them the opportunity to examine personal leadership styles and strengths through the use of exercises and assessment instruments. Faculty Fellows will be included in many of these activities, supplementing the curriculum development work in which they will be engaged.

Week Three: Summer Language Institute (SLI) – SLI engages IIPP Fellows without previously demonstrated foreign language competency in an intensive language-training program focused on Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese. Faculty Fellows will observe the language instruction model employed at the Middlebury College Language Schools, developing plans for enhancing the language offerings on their campuses. The emphasis in this segment will be on gaining curriculum development and integration strategies from foreign language experts.

Transportation, meals, and lodging will be provided for participants in the UNCFSP Faculty Fellows Program.
