The mission of the MES Program is to provide traditionally underrepresented students with exposure to research in the areas of biotechnology, computer science, environmental science, and engineering.
Eligibility requirements for rising undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors include the following:

Are enrolled full-time at an accredited four–year baccalaureate-granting institution

Are U.S. Citizens or legal residents (documentary support required)

Have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale)

Are underrepresented in STEM and other related DOE disciplines disciplines (i.e. minority populations, women, disabled)
Though not a requirement, applicants are expected to have an interest in environmental justice, environmental safety and/or other enviromental concerns.
Internship
The MES internship is a 10-week hands-on research experience provided at a Department of Energy or Legacy Management site.
Professional Development

Student Orientation - Each stuudent will receive an orientation during the first week of their internship experience.

Conference Attendance - Following the internship period students will have the opportunity to compete for a travel award to attend the State of Environmental Justice Conference, hosted annually in Washington, DC, where they will present on their funded research.
